In fact the man with 10 MO Awards will go down as one of Australia’s best live performers.
On Monday he was recognised for the showman he was by his family and friends when his farewell started like a concert. It ended with his final curtain being a standing ovation as Rikki left the building. The celebration of his life and the difference he made to so many was not only big, it was beautiful. All for a colourful man with natural talent who touched so many lives.
“I am sure he is here right now saying the most important thing in the whole wide world is love.''
The auditorium in the Builder’s Club overflowed with people in bright colours wanting to say goodbye. When the music started and rock star style introduction was made it was like a major artist was about to arrive.
And arrive for the occasion a great entertainer did as a video of Rikki started playing. It was like Rikki was back on stage doing what he loved belting out some songs from Johnny O’Keefe, Elton John and Elvis Presley. Those present felt like they were back in the audience at one of Rikki’s shows. And once again he was making everyone in the room feel special. Just as he did in life.
What followed, for the man who won Bert Newton’s New Faces (the Australia Idol and X-Factor of the ’80s), was unlike any other funeral. It was all about remembering the colourful life of a man loved by so many. It was hard to get an accurate count of how many were in the room but it was well over 500. Some thought as many as 1000.
The car park was full an hour before Rikki’s final show and the club was a sea of colour before, during and after his farewell, just as he had requested. It was a fitting goodbye to one of Wollongong’s favourite sons.
There were stories about how hard Rikki fought his illness after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma blood cancer in 2009. How he had worked every day until May, when he could no more.
The celebration of Rikki’s life conveyed all the love he shared so openly for his family and friends. Many funny stories were told. The stage was adorned with MO Awards, costumes, wigs and a variety of props from Elton John-style glasses and hat, to a pink outfit and blond wig he wore for one of the colourful characters he created. A story about how that started at the expense of a friend had everyone laughing.
Those present heard about the practical jokes Rikkster the Trickster played and the funny nicknames he gave to people he liked. It became clear he had never said a bad word about anyone and would go out of his way to help people.
As close friends took the stage they recalled how he always spoke with great pride to everyone about his family and their achievements. Wife Jane and children Taylour'e Louise and Tyne-James also shared their love and admiration for him as a great father and family man.
Jane said Rikki showed how important and powerful friendship and love is.
“I am sure he is here right now saying the most important thing in the whole wide world is love. So love each other as he loved you all very, very much,” she said.
Taylour'e Louise said he always showed her and her brother how much he loved them and how he called her his little Moo Cow.
“Why that name stuck I don’t know but I have had a birthday card and a cake with a cow on it ever since,” she said.
Tyne-James spoke straight from his heart before a video of him singing What a Wonderful World for his father was played.
“From me and my family I want you to know how much it means that you all to be here today. I love him so much and I know how much it means to him. So thank you”.
Rikki is so highly regarded in entertainment circles that friend Scott Radburn arrived on crutches after surgery last Thursday and Graham Wilson secured leave from hospital for the afternoon to be there for his mate.
The celebration of Rikki’s life was a fitting tribute to the man who not only entertained so many but touched so many lives. And always will.
The ultimate Entertainer & the ultimate all round good guy. Phil Nixon, Albion Park

My favourite memory of Rikki is of many years ago after another great show at Stepping Out Theatre Restaurant in Penrith where Rikki was always the star. When we left the venue there was Rikki out in the car park still in character as Jimmy Barnes singing Khe Sanh at the top of his lungs and everyone leaving joined in. It was a magical moment. I am pleased that a few months ago I got the chance to remind him of that night and he laughed and said "thanks for that happy memory love, they were good days". They were indeed. Rest in peace Rikki. Pamela Hawkins Werrington
