The South Coast Branch Surf Life Saving 2016 Annual Awards presentation evening took place at the Shoalhaven Heads Bowling and Recreation Club on July 16.
This year’s South Coast Surf Life Saver of the Year was Naida Guy of Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club.
Guy has been involved in surf lifesaving since the age of six years, with 29 years of continuous service.
She is a wife, mother, registered nurse and active surf lifesaver.
Her husband and children are all involved in surf lifesaving.
Guy’s award recognises her contribution as a patrolling member, performing 82 hours of patrol at Kiama Downs Surf Club in the 2015/2016 season.
As well as having all her surf club credentials she has first aid knowledge and skills.
Guy also provides mentoring to young surf lifesavers and peer support to other members.
She is the Junior Activity Co-ordinator for her club and coordinates the Junior Activity (Nippers) program, and mentors the age managers with her husband Steven.
As part of this role she is also the competition coordinator and has trained, encouraged and coordinated taking Nippers to Branch, State and Country Championships as well as attending the four premiership rounds of the Sydney Water Carnival.
Each Thursday she coordinates the board training at Minnamurra River, and has organised fundraising events for the Kiama Downs club with Nippers washing cars for extra dollars.
Guy also competes in the Inflatable Rescue Boat Racing Championships. She is The Team (boat driver) and along with Kirsty Honey (crewperson) has achieved great results.
These include first in the 2015 NSW IRB Premiership Female Rescue, first in 2015 NSW IRB Premiership Female Mass, first in 2015 NSW State Championships Female Rescue and finals in the 2015 Australian Titles Female Rescue and Taplin relay.
Guy was the first female competitor to make a state final for Kiama Downs Surf Club.
She is now competing in the Opens and over-35’s events at the Premiership rounds, State and Australian competitions, and has been in the NSW State team since its inception.

*South Coast Coach of the Year – Nathan Foster of Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club.
