Red Point Gallery are presenting an exhibition of new work by Auguste Blackman and Peter Solway entitled Two Black Swans.
Two Black Swans will be on at Red Point Gallery, located at 100 Wentworth Street, Port Kembla.
It will be officially opened on Saturday, July 9 and run until Sunday, July 17.
The gallery is open from Thursday to Sunday, 11am-4pm.
Kiama Heights resident Blackman was a student in Fairy Meadow resident Solway’s painting class at the West Wollongong TAFE more than a decade ago.
Blackman’s work has been exhibited widely throughout Australia and is featured in a number of private collections nationally and internationally.
His father and renowned artist Charles was famous for his signature Alice in Wonderland series from the 1950s.
Auguste Blackman said a selection of paintings will be on show at Port Kembla, working within the theme of the Ern Malley fiasco of 1940s Australia.
The series of poems are widely considered Australia's most celebrated literary hoax.
“Two poets invested a nom de plume and hoodwinked Australia’s most discerning editors and the cultural elite by parodying the pretensions of the art and cultural landscape at the time,” Blackman said.
”But rather than pull the wool over our eyes, we are instead taking the fictional Malley’s poetry at its critically acclaimed value and pursuing the metaphor of Black Swan as controversialist or alien invader.
“The latter stands in to represent white Australia’s presence as alien trespasser in sacred land; the land of the indigenous Australian people.”
The show comprises a series of accomplished paintings by Blackman of swans, Alice in Wonderland, butterflies and more as well as works by Solway including ‘Elvis’ Entry into Parkes’, which pays homage to James Ensor.
Red Point Artists Association aims to bring together artists, artisans, craftspeople and art students in all disciplines to advance the visual arts in the Illawarra and beyond.
Formed in May 2008, RPAA established workshops, studios and an exhibition gallery in Port Kembla where established and emerging artists could display their work.
