Presented by Merrigong Theatre Company, the live show melds technology with puppetry, music and animation and will be held on July 22-23.
Described by critics as “... absorbing, touching and uplifting,” The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer is a multi-award winning, one-man micro-epic that explores the oldest frontier - the deep blue sea.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the seas have risen and the few human survivors live atop skyscrapers, it captures the protagonists last ditch effort to save the human race.
The plot centres around Alvin Sputnik, who accepts the perilous mission of journeying down through the mysterious depths of the deep blue sea to find a new place for humanity to live.
Created by acclaimed theatre maker Tim Watts, the show debuted at Perth’s Blue Room Theatre in 2009.
Following this, it presented a highly successful season at the New York International Fringe Festival where it was awarded “Outstanding Solo Show.” The show has since been performed over 400 times across the world including Korea, China, New Zealand, US, Canada and the UK.
The show will be performed by award-winning Western Australian actor, puppeteer, singer, writer and theatre practitioner St John Cowcher, a contemporary performance graduate (Edith Cowan University).
St John is a founding member of the performance company The Wet Weather Ensemble and associate artist at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and Weeping Spoon Productions, as well as a performer in The Big HOO-HAA.
The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer has been awarded the winner of the following shows: Fil Fest Brazil 2015, Best Theatre Show at Auckland Fringe 2011 and Best Puppetry at the Adelaide Fringe 2010.
The show plays at IPAC on Friday, July 22 (12pm & 7.30pm) and Saturday, July 23 (7.30pm).
