Police in Goulburn are trying to determine whether a kangaroo that was dragged through the city centre was alive when it was first tied to the back of the car.

Officers found the dead animal at the intersection of Auburn and Montague streets about 11.40pm on Sunday.
Witnesses said the kangaroo had been tied to the back of a green Nissan Pulsar and driven through town.
Police were told the two occupants of the car cut the animal loose and fled.
