The vineyard won for its 2009 Reserve Chardonnay Pinot Noir, made from the same grapes as last year's winner, the 2009 Chardonnay Pinot Noir Methode Champenoise.

The Shoalhaven's Coolangatta Estate dominated, taking home 13 of the 20 major awards including Best Red, Best White and the Sandy Halley Memorial Award for the Best Current Vintage.

Fourteen wineries entered 100 wines in the show - the judging panel awarded seven gold, 15 silver and 28 bronze medals across 15 categories.

Doors were opened to the public on Friday night for the wine tasting and awards presentation.

Chief judge Christian Gaffey said the Shoalhaven and Southern Highland wine regions were starting to establish their identity.

"We judged a beautiful pinot noir class and semillon class," he said.

"We've really seen a jump in the quality of rieslings . . . and modern red wine making, not over the top, just nice, elegant wines."

Mr Gaffey said the winemakers had done well despite a wet 2011 and 2012 season.

"We've seen the difficulties of the 2012 vintage, poking its head out in some of the whites," he said.

"Because it was wet, the grower's hand gets forced a bit in terms of when to pick, so we're seeing a lot of green characters, just a little washed out."
