Last Thursday, Gary “Robbo” Robertson died in a truck incident outside the Moss Vale Limeworks.
His best mate’s son Cain Ryan started the Facebook page Turn Your Lights on for Robbo, where truckies drove with their lights on all day on Wednesday.
He started the event as a tribute to the man who taught him how to drive semi-trailers.
“He was just a typical Aussie bloke – he’d give you his last dollar,” Mr Ryan said.
“He was happy to help anyone and he’d never had a bad word to say about anybody.”
Mr Ryan said the number of people who remembered Robbo came as a surprise to partner Bernadette and their children Jenna, Michael, Jake, Cassidy and Tyson.
“I think it surprised his family,” he said. “I knew a lot of people knew him but his family didn’t know just how much respect people had for him.”
Mr Ryan and his father took part in a 12-truck convoy up Mt Ousley to pay tribute to their friend.
And the tributes kept flowing through the day.
“It’s been everywhere – I’ve been up on the Hume Highway all the way to Marulan and you see the local trucks from this area, they’ve all had their lights on today,” Mr Ryan said.
