Attendees explored ideas around opening the channels of communication on the topic of marriage equality and discussed ways to inform people about same-sex marriage.
AME NSW co-convenor Dr Shirleene Robinson said marriage equality is a simple issue of fairness and equality.
“We are visiting thirty electorates across Australia as part of our campaign to help people in this area to work towards marriage equality, by either having a candidate who supports marriage equality or building the networks that will promote marriage equality,” she said.
“We believe it’s something that appeals to Australian values of a fair-go and a better society.
“AME is holding a workshop on the south coast so community members can get involved in the campaign, ask questions and share their stories on why marriage equality matters.”
Chair of AME Alex Greenwich said the campaign for marriage equality in Nowra and throughout the south coast is inspirational.
“It’s quite clear that for people down here, marriage equality is about people not about politics,” he said.
“We have such broad range support down here and so much great activity that’s happening. It’s clear there’s lots of people here who have a gay person in their family or a gay colleague.
“There’s a strong and inspiring campaign down here.”
