Mr Hunt was at the University of Wollongong on Monday with NSW Greens senator Lee Rhiannon to tout the party’s $10 billion public transport plan.

When it comes to rail transport, Mr Hunt was a fan of high-speed rail. However, the routes suggested to date bypass the Illawarra and go through the Southern Highlands.

The Greens was also looking at transport issues more directly linked to the Illawarra. 

“Our region desperately needs better public transport,” Mr Hunt said.

“It is well past time to invest in high-speed rail along our east coast, but equally our local lines need to be upgraded, and services increased to meet 21st century needs.

“Meanwhile every train station should be accessible to those who push prams or have mobility or visual disabilities.” 

The $10 billion plan – to be spent over four years – also included $125 million in subsidies for NSW bus fleet owners to upgrade to hybrid or electric buses.

The party suggested this could lead to more than 800 hybrid and electric buses on the road in NSW.

There would also be a subsidy to encourage motorists to switch to hybrid vehicles as well, and for car park owners to install charging stations.

“I have been able to convert my own Toyota Prius hybrid into a "plug-in" enabling it to run the first 50km without fuel.” Mr Hunt said.

“Not a simple conversion, but it works very effectively and ideal for all the short trips we make.

“It shows what is possible, and better factory-made ‘plug-in’ hybrids are starting to come onto the Australian market, along with full electric cars having a greater range between charges, while prices are dropping.”

Mr Hunt said the party would also introduce an annual $250 million program aimed at encouraging people walk or cycle rather than take the car.
