On Tuesday, Member for Kiama Gareth Ward and NSW Premier Mike Baird visited Gerringong Tennis Club to announce $25,000 funding.
“This $25,000 funding will provide a real boost for Gerringong Tennis Club, allowing its members to upgrade the clubhouse and surrounds for wheelchair access and future wheelchair tournaments,” Mr Ward said.
“Gerringong Tennis Club is an excellent social hub and sporting facility in our local community and I am extremely happy that these upgrades will lead to the club being able to host a wheelchair tournament in the future.”
Mr Ward joked that after the recent announcement that Kiama and Shoalhaven councils wouldn’t be merged, the Premier’s “visa’s back approved, you’re allowed back again”.
Mr Baird joined in, thanking Mr Ward for “reinstating my visa”. He also congratulated the club on a “real group effort” in making their facilities more accessible.
Gerringong Tennis Club president Michelle Quine said the $25,000 funding would be vital.
“Our club has worked tirelessly over the past few years to upgrade our facilities to make them disabled friendly,” she said.
“With the help of government grants, Kiama Municipal Council and community support, we have upgraded our two concrete courts (at a cost of $150,000), built a beautiful big deck with a ramp and installed a glass sliding door into the clubhouse.
“With this latest grant we are going to upgrade our toilets to make them disabled friendly and finish off our current works.
“This grant should see us finish all works required to be able to have wheelchair tournaments at our club.”
Mrs Quine said the Gerringong Men’s Shed had completed the decking work.
