Two Royal Australian Air Force airmen detached to Canberra Regional Explosive Ordinance Services travelled down to inspect the device. They deemed it safe to transport back to Canberra where it will be safely disposed of.
The 13cm device was initially located on a property off Wagonga Scenic Drive sometime ago by new owners going through old material on the property. It was then moved to a Narooma property where police were called on Monday.
Residents are reminded never to touch or move any suspected ordinance and it far better to be safe than sorry and to call their local police immediately.
The Breda mortar grenade was a breech-loaded mortar dating back as far as the Second World War containing 70 grams of TNT surrounded by a steel fragmentation coil. It weighed .465kg and could be fired to a distance of 536 metres.
