The Kiama council event will run from 10am to 2.30pm at Black Beach, Kiama.
Dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome.
Kiama council ranger Tom Ward said the event was an opportunity for rangers to “meet and greet” dog owners and their animals, and update people on the latest companion animals legislation.
Mr Ward said the day was designed to reinforce key messages of responsible pet ownership.
Among the issues canvassed will be NSW seat belt laws in regards to travelling with pets, and general information about heatstroke and companion animals.
Activities planned for the day include a dog agility demonstration; demonstrations of fly ball; presentation and Q&A session by canine behaviour specialist Steve Austin; giveaways; jumping castle and face-painting; product demonstrations including grooming and naughty dog school discounted dog services; and an opportunity to get expert advice from vets and Kiama council rangers.
Information will be shared about dog off-leash etiquette and Kiama’s off-leash areas.
Kiama council has six grassed areas and three beach areas (from sunrise to sunset).
An area of the Minnamurra River at Riverside Drive is a swimming area for dogs before 9am and after 5pm.
The Master of Ceremonies for the day will be Ian Hornsby.
Mr Hornsby started the Kiama Canine Capers friendship group four years ago.
The group, which now boasts more than 130 members, meets daily at the Minnamurra Headland from 4pm.
The day will also be used to highlight the importance of microchipping, registration and advising of a change of address.
The free day has been made possible with the assistance of a $3440 grant through the state government's Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program.
All dogs attending the day must be on a lead and under effective control by a competent person over 16 years of age.
Muzzles are recommended for dogs which are unable to socialise. Please bring bags to clean up after your dog.
