The Gerringong Masters Surf Boat Crew won a gold medal at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (also known as ‘The Aussies’) on the Sunshine Coast last month.
The nucleus of the boat crew has been trying to win an Australian championship for nearly 20 years.
The club’s crew of Bruce Mackie, Steve Dunn, Evan Prytherch, Mal Dunwoodie and Sweep Mark Booth were successful in the championship carnival at Alexandra Headland.
The old boys had a great carnival, winning their first two heats and coming second in the third heat.
They went into the final as the leading point-scorer.
The final was a titanic struggle, with Gerringong, Mooloolaba and Fairbanks surging away from the rest of the field.
The lead changed hands throughout the race, with Gerringong and Mooloolaba both on the same wave across the finish line together for a photo finish.
Gerringong got the nod by the narrowest of margins.
There were plenty of smiling faces as their dream had now been realised.
