The update comes as the government announced a trial using credit and debit cards to tap on rather than Opal cards.
The trial would begin in 2017, though further details of the timing have not been released.
The updating of the app was in response to the popularity of the first version, with more than 300,000 people downloading it to their phone.
The changes to the app allow people to add $40, $60, $80, $100 and $120 to their Opal card, by supplying credit card details.
There is the possibility some people will not want to enter their credit card details through an app, but it is a process not dissimilar to other apps – such as Uber.
Other changes include the ability to select an auto top-up option, search for a retailer to top up in person and a trip planner that estimates ticket costs.
The app will also allow people to check their balances and call up a record of their bus and train travel.
Commuters can also link multiple Opal card to the app, which makes it easier to keep tabs on balances of children’s cards.
“With this new app, travelling with Opal just got even easier,” Transport Minister Andrew Constance said.
“With a few presses on the screen, customers can check their balance, top up and plan their travels for the day.”
