The “Big No” was organised by Kiama Councillor Neil Reilly who’s leading the campaign against a proposed council amalgamation with Shoalhaven and was planned solely via social media.
“We can show the state government that we’re a community and when it’s necessary we can come together,” he said.
Judi O’Brien was one of the patrons involved and said after living in other areas of the country she believes Kiama is like no other place because of its strong sense of community.
The Red Cross volunteer said residents were also very willing to help a cause, having raised more than $13,000 in the last month alone for the charity from a population of 13,000.
“They really came to the fore. It shows how brilliant Kiama is and we wish to stand alone.”
The demonstration coincided with the KISS Arts Festival, spread along the harbour foreshore.
