“My wife and I both lost our mothers last year and I thought it was time to stop and reassess things,” he said.

Mr Diskon began his career as a cadet at 3XY in Melbourne in his early 20s, working on the likes of the Mike Walsh radio show.

After this, he landed radio jobs in the likes of Cooma, Canberra, Nowra, Inverell, Bega and Mudgee, where he was program director.

In the mid-1980s he had a stint in television at MTN 9 in Griffith.

“They told me I had a good head for radio,” he said.

After this he worked for the Tasmanian Broadcast Network, and it was here he enjoyed his favourite radio memory in with comedian Col Elliott in 1991.

“On April Fool’s Day we broadcast that there was going to be a tunnel with a railway line going under Bass Straight to Victoria, and that listeners could be one of the first people on it by ringing a number,” he said. 

“Telstra rang us and told us to shut up because so many people had been ringing it.

“I asked Andrew Constance if we could do something similar when the duplication of the Batemans Bay bridge was announced, and he said ‘no bloody way’.” 

His darkest hour in broadcasting was also in Tasmania, having to cover the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

“Nothing I have had to do was as difficult as that,” he said.

Mr Diskon was working in Inverell when he got a call from his old mate and sparring partner Kimmi Saker about joining 2EC in Batemans Bay.

“One look out the studio window was enough to make me want to come here,” he said.

He greatly enjoyed his eight years at 2EC. 

“I have enjoyed the camaraderie, and being involved with things like Rob Pollock and Brad Rossiter’s campaign for the oncology ward at Moruya Hospital,” he said.  

Fortunately Disko won’t be totally lost to radio.

“I would like to put back into the industry and teach community broadcasting,” he said.

“I will also be filling in as a casual at 2EC, but not before I have a two month break,” he said.
