A major review of politician's entitlements released this week recommended extra taxpayer support for MPs in the "Big Six" electorates that have a land area of more than 500,000 square kilometres.

Under the plan – which has the Turnbull government's in-principle support – the members would get a third, fully-staffed electorate office. They could also be in line for bigger travel allowances and charter flight budgets.

The new electorate offices could cost as much as $500,000 each to set up, based on recent examples of fit-out costs. Taxpayers would then be charged hundreds of thousands more every year for staff and other operational costs.

Four Coalition MPs – Liberal MPs Melissa Price, Rick Wilson and Rowan Ramsay and Nationals MP Bruce Scott – would all benefit from the resource boost. Only one Labor MP – Warren Snowdon in the Northern Territory – would be eligible, while independent Bob Katter would also qualify.

Ms Price is the member for Durack, a West Australian electorate that accounts for a fifth of Australia's landmass. Mr Snowdon's Lingiari accounts for 99 per cent of the NT and Mr Ramsay's Grey about 90 per cent of of SA. Mr Scott's Maranoa and Mr Katter's Kennedy account for 75 per cent of Queensland.

The entitlements review was commissioned by the Abbott government in the wake of the Bronwyn Bishop chopper scandal. The Turnbull government has signalled it will support all of its 36 recommendations.

It recommended that entitlements be rebadged "work expenses", that Canberra COMCAR arrangements be changed to get better value for money and minor cuts be made to family reunion benefits.

It also recommended more frequent reporting of expenses to improve transparency and accountability. In what's being bill "the Bronwyn Rule", it also recommends a ban on short-distance chopper charters.

However the Greens called it a "lukewarm collection of half-measures" that made only "baby steps" towards what was needed.
