Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast, and Kiama MP Gareth Ward said that the new depot has 60 staff and is part of a network of eight rail infrastructure sites that replace 35 previous work locations.
“The new state-of-the-art Wollongong depot will play a vital role in maintaining the South Coast’s rail infrastructure so train customers receive the safe, reliable services they deserve,” he said.
“This facility follows the opening of the Sydney Trains Wollongong Network Base in April 2014. It also demonstrates our strong commitment to providing local jobs and investing in infrastructure here in the Illawarra.”
Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins said building the new regional depots is focused on improving how maintenance is carried out.
