There’s no better opportunity to adopt one than at the Batemans Bay National Adoption Day this Saturday.
Eurobodalla Animal Welfare League volunteer carers have six kittens that need re-homing and they will be at Petstock Batemans Bay this Saturday to meet potential new owners.
“There is Bobby, Cassie, Scarlett, Alice, Maggie and Terry,” AWL kitten carer Ann Duffy said.
“People won’t be able to adopt the kittens on the spot, because that often causes problems due to unsuitability, but AWL volunteers and Petstock staff will talk to them about needs and family and home situations and so they can then arrange a time to pick them up,’ AWL cat carer Elaine Schutt said.
The AWL carers have gotten to know the kittens’ personalities and have a good idea about owner compatibility.
ON Saturday, people can also learn about becoming a pet foster carer, where they can look after rescue animals until a permanent home is found.
A recent national survey conducted by Petstock showed that 77 per cent of animal owners would consider adopting their next pet.
Petstock Batemans Bay’s Harvey Doberer is hoping there is plenty of that spirit at their store this Saturday.
“It is the best way to turn heartbreak into hope for orphaned animals,” he said.
The initiative, led by Petstock charity foundation Petstock Assist, in partnership with not-for-profit animal rescue organisation PetRescue, aims to raise awareness of pet adoption and encourage Australians to consider giving a rescue pet a forever home.
“We are strong advocates of pet adoption and through Petstock Assist we’re committed to supporting Pet Rescue to help find homes for rescue pets Australian-wide,” Petstock CEO Shane Young said.
“Last National Pet Adoption Day saw at least 236 pets find forever homes and we’re hoping to increase on this figure this February.”
Since PetRescue was founded in 2004, the number of adopted pets has increased each year including 75,000 in 2015 alone.
Pet Rescue Co-Founder, Vickie Davy said events like Pet Adoption Day show that choosing to adopt a pet can deliver huge rewards.
“In most cases, pets end up in rescue through no fault of their own,” she said.
“The most common reasons are owners’ lifestyle changes, health issues and the financial costs of owning a pet, as opposed to behavioural issues.
“Rescue pets face a grim future without adoption, so by welcoming a rescue pet into your home you may be saving a life.”
National Pet Adoption Day is at Petstock at 13 Kylie Crescent Batemans Bay 10am to 2pm Saturday.
