In 2016, the IAS will once again provide sporting scholarships to more than 150 athletes across eight sporting programs including cricket, cycling, golf, lawn bowls, hockey, netball, rugby sevens and triathlon. There are also two non-sport specific programs with the LoneStar program and Athletes with a Disability. Athletes will be provided with the opportunity to engage in additional education programs including the academically focused In-2-Uni Program being delivered by the Academy’s education partner, the University of Wollongong.
Additionally, through the partnership with Big Fat Smile, scholarship holders will be offered the opportunity to undertake a course in leadership and the means to engage the community in various leadership roles.
While the IAS celebrated 30 years of existence in 2015, the graduation for the 2016 scholarship group will be the Academy’s 30th Graduation class and will be acknowledged across the various Mayoral Receptions throughout the year.
It has been a highly successful past few weeks for IAS graduates with Grace Stewart scoring the only goal for the Hockeyroos in her recent debut against Germany, Cyclist Caleb Ewan winning two stages at the Tour Down Under and Golfer Travis Smyth falling just short in his bid to win the Australian Men’s Amateur title.
Stewart, who has just moved from Gerringong to Perth, where the world No. 3 Hockeyroos are based, said: "It was pretty exciting (to make my international debut), and scoring the goal just topped it off."
In India in the Indian Premier hockey league, IAS graduates Flynn Ogilvie and Tristan White have had starring roles in the opening games.
Ogilvie playing for the Ranchi Rays and White for the Delhi Waveriders have played three games with both teams topping the pool.
However, Ogilvie had a setback rolling his ankle in the game against Kalinger and losing the opening game to the Punjab Warriors but will play the next game.
Ogilvie said this was their first game and the team was just getting together with new Indian players. They won their next games beating Utter Pradesh 4-2 and the Delhi team 2-1.
White with the Delhi team had more success winning three games in beating Punjab 5-4, Uttar Pradesh 3-1 and Dabang Mumbai 4-3.
This Indian league has a new format with a field goal and penalty strokes counting as two goals apiece making the game more exciting from open play rather than scoring from drag flicks.
Both Ogilvie and White will also be vying for Olympic spots after the Indian league which finishes this month.
