Mungovan lent his vocals and drumming skills to Different People (Stand Together), this year's song for Music Count Us In.

Described by mentor and producer John Foreman as taking an "Indie folk approach", the song was written by three students with the help of musician Josh Pyke.

Another 11 students from Sydney and the South Coast, Mungovan among them, were called in to work with the industry's best session musicians.

The year 12 student, who starts his HSC on October 15, recorded the drums and lead male vocals across two days of recording under the guidance of leading Sydney studio drummer Gordon Rytmeister and Foreman himself.

"The things Gordon can do are crazy - it was fantastic working with him," he said.

Mungovan said he had played drums in a studio before, but drumming for an unfamiliar song was a challenge.

"All I had was a vocal line and guitar ... but John knew where the song was going and Gordon would get an idea and I'd play it," he said.

Mungovan said he had not thought about students nationally listening to his voice before. "It's a weird thought," he said.

Mungovan also recently recorded his solo track, The Strength - it is currently available on YouTube and Triple J Unearthed.

Tommy M and the Mastersounds is due to release its new album early next year.

Music Count Us In has been held for the past three years. It encourages schools to expose their students to music.
