There’s been an all-star cast come and leave through the gates at her Berry property Boynton Park.
Boban tops the list, and Hawkspur “was just a baby” when Roberts started developing them for Australia’s top training stable.
While Roberts was at the launch of the Black Diamond Cup at Kembla Grange recently, Beyond Thankful and Opinion were enjoying the paddock on Roberts’ farm.
But, fitting perfectly with the celebration of women in racing at the Black Diamond Cup, Roberts is now chasing her own generation of winners. Taking up a trainer’s licence barely 12 months ago, the wife of prominent veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts is aiming to have a pair of two-year-old’s at the Magic Millions carnival in January.
“We got the two fillies to target the Magic Millions,” she said.
“Divajeu was unlucky in the Gimcrack (Stakes at Randwick in October) but is very talented and has come on nicely. Just Victoria has been in work for four weeks and going very well.”
It’s a golden time for women in racing, following Michelle Payne’s stunning Melbourne Cup triumph on Prince of Penzance.
Roberts was joined by a number of leading Illawarra and South Coast horsewomen at the Black Diamond launch, including Melissa Harrison, Diane Poidevin-Laine and Michelle Ritchie.
Roberts’ push into training came after a 20-year stint with her husband working in the South African racing industry.
“I’ve left it a little bit long in the game to be doing something as successful as Gai Waterhouse has done,” Roberts said.
“But you’ve got these young girls here and the awareness of women in racing now is opening doors to even school leavers. There is a career path to follow.”
Roberts said Payne’s success showed no barriers remain in a once male-dominated sport.
“(Payne’s) such a remarkable young woman,” she said.
“It’s really good for the industry.
“Not only is she talented, but she presents herself really well.”
The Black Diamond Cup is on at Kembla Grange on December 6.
