The money was collected over a six month period at the NRMA Insurance office and was presented to the Heffernan family on Friday.
NRMA consultant Gladys Cutajar was instrumental in organising the fundraising.
“Over the last six months we have been asking customers if they would like to donate to Dexter to help him out,” she said.
“And our customers were good enough to donate $564.15.
“We wanted to thank our loyal customers and let them know where the money will be spent.”
Dexter was born prematurely, which resulted in him suffering from a form of brain damage, cerebral palsy and impaired vision.
In a devastating twist of fate, shortly after his first birthday he was also diagnosed with cancer. Since treatment he has been free of cancer for almost three years.
Dexter’s mother Lenice Heffernan, said the money will cover 80 per cent of the cost of a new piece of equipment for the family vehicle.
“It’s amazing, this has been something Gladys has been working on for a little while and it really is amazing,” Mrs Heffernan said.
“The money will go towards a portable ramp for the back of the car, so when he gets his wheelchair we will be able to push it up instead of having to lift it in and out.
“His chair is quite heavy, it will make life much easier.”
