Claire Wren, 9, from Woonona East Public School was the best placed, making it through to round 8 - the word ‘commandeer’ eventually her undoing.
Her previous words were lyricist, roughage, protect, carnival, soldier, miniature and animosity.
Lucy Moore of Kiama Public School, Caitlyn Weber of Mount Ousley Public School and Zoha Parvin from Shell Cove Public School also did well.
Lucy made it into round 6 in the senior competition, correctly spelling ramshackle, cajole, colloquialism, catechism and effigy.
She incorrectly spelled paraplegia to be knocked out of the competition.
Some of the other quirky words the region’s students did spell correctly included rhomboid.
The final winners came from North Sydney and Woollahra.
