Tom Prosser, 12, was recently named the William Spence Memorial 2015 Pathways Player of the Year by the Kiama Junior Rugby Union club.
The award was presented to Kiama Junior Rugby by the Spence family in 2010, in memory of the late William Spence.
The trophy is annually awarded to a Kiama Junior Rugby player from the under-12s Pathways Rugby program whose “high standards in attitude, commitment and playing skill reflect good sportsmanship, team spirit and promotion of the ethos of the Kiama Junior Rugby Club”.
Kiama resident Tom has been with the Kiama club since the age of seven, and plays in the front row.
According to club officials, every year he has been playing above his age group so he can enjoy the sport with his friends.
The Kiama High year 7 student was recognised for the extra work he does on the field.
According to the club, he “operates in an area of the game where accolades aren’t to be found, but where games are won and lost”.
Tom has been selected in the Under-13’s Illawarriors team for 2016, and recently captained their under-12s’ 2015 team, the boys winning the NSW Country Championships in Armidale.
The Junior Illawarriors is the regional junior rugby representative team for the Illawarra district.
Illawarra junior rugby consists of ten rugby clubs - Shoalhaven, Kiama, Avondale, Vikings, Tech, University, Shamrocks, Bowral, Camden and Campbelltown.
Next year, the under-13 Junior Illawarriors will participate in the New Zealand South Island Tour held in the April school holidays; the NSW Country Championships in May (to defend their title) and the NSW State Championships in June.
The team is actively fund-raising for their New Zealand tour, and have an overall goal of $100,000.
Their efforts will include hosting several fund-raising events, most notably a gala dinner with guest speakers and former Wallabies Simon Poidevin and Phil Kearns.
This will take place on March 19 at The Pavilion.
