A sudden storm front bearing harsh winds, hail and heavy rain brought panic to West Wollongong Sunday afternoon, with the roof of a four storey apartment block being peeled off like a sardine can.

Neighbours of number 80-84 New Dapto Road witnessed hearing a loud crash or loud bang around 5:45pm, while others mistook the abrupt noise for thunder.
Four fire crews were called to the scene where ceiling insulation was strewn across the road, stuck in trees and on power-lines. Parts of the top floor’s wooden truss including the roof to the deck were seen flying around in the air by residents, part of which smashed through an adjacent apartments bedroom window.
Adam Harris, 31, lives in the units across the street and said insulation made it’s way into his housemates bedroom and stuck to their walls thanks to the “mini tornado”.
“I was watching out my window and there was insulation going left then right then left, we were thinking what the hell was going on,” he said.
Luckily no cars parked on the street were damaged, but Mr Harris said another top floor apartment at the back of his building was also damaged by debris.
“Something went over the roof and back down and went through another guy’s living room on the top floor, it went up and over and just nailed it,” he said.
Dane Sanderson, 26, also watched the debris flying around his window, still in shock it came from his own apartment building. He said out of nowhere the storm front hit, with the complex losing power, before “wooden palings and insulation” flying around.
It’s just one of several freak incidents brought on by Sunday’s severe weather, although the SES said the Illawarra’s southern suburbs seemed to have gotten away unscathed.
