We are good friends and have a great time... It’s a great feeling.
- Ashley Roulstone.
The band play a selection of rock cover songs including AC/DC, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jet and Paramore.
They practice every week and recently added another member.
The band, primarily made up of Jamberoo residents, formed about four years ago after a primary school music night.
They are currently comprised of lead vocalist Ashley Roulstone, 14; Henri Richards-Palk, 14, (drums); Liam Hedges, 17, (guitars); Aidan Hedges, 14, (bass); and Lachie Mills, 13, (guitars).
Kiama resident Lachie joined the band a few months ago.
The members attend schools including St Mary Star of the Sea College, The Illawarra Grammar School and Smith’s Hill High School.
They recently played on the main stage at Run Wollongong in support of Jessica Mauboy in front of an estimated few thousand people.
“It was really, really good,” Ashley said of performing in front of the large gathering at WIN Stadium.
“I got to meet Jessica Mauboy and it was really cool.
“She was really lovely and gave me good advice.”
They were also joint grand final winners in the recent KaBari Bar Open Mic competition.
What made this effort more impressive was the day prior to the show their drummer broke his collarbone, meaning they quickly improvised to perform an acoustic set for their three songs.
During the past year they have performed at two Music in the Park events in Kiama, football presentation evenings, a PCYC Christmas party and Australia Day events in Shellharbour.
They also played at Kiama Relay for Life (with a stand-in drummer).
The band is planning to appear at a Warrawong festival in November, as well as an event in Nowra in late November.
Given their drummer’s recent injury, the band will be limiting their upcoming gigs while he recovers.
Meanwhile, they also plan to start writing original material.
Ashley said although she still felt nervous before performing, she was far less shy than she was before joining Rose Amongst Thorns.
“I just love the whole experience of being in our band,” Ashley said.
“We are good friends and have a great time.
“It’s a great feeling.”
