Local artists Jamie Cole, Greg Vale, Karen Wright and Mark Lucas collaborated to bring the exhibition to fruition.
A Welcome to Country from the Illawarra Flame Trees, an all young Aboriginal women’s performance and leadership group opened the evening. This was followed by a rendition of the National Anthem in local Aboriginal language and a spectacular dance performance celebrating the fauna and bird-life of the rainforest.
The launch raised $500 for ‘Friends of the Minnamurra Rainforest’, with 20 of the works on display sold on the night.
Dr Kevin Mills, a botanist, ecologist and expert on rainforests in the Illawarra who has studied the region’s rainforest for many years, spoke about the history of rainforests in the area and their importance to biodiversity and tourism in the region.
