The booth offered a convenient service to local seniors and pensioners, who lined up to apply for a gold/seniors Opal card on the spot with the support from trained staff.
Heather Shepherd from Albion Park was one such resident who took the opportunity to apply for her Opal card at the information desk.
“I mostly travel by train, I like the paper tickets better and I think it’s a shame pensioners could not have just had the paper tickets,” she said.
“I only go to Sydney three or four times a year and to get an Opal card I think is a bit unnecessary.
“When you travel so little, I thought the paper cards would have been enough.
“It’s good to have this kiosk here, I’m pleased to have help applying for the card as I don’t use the internet.”
The information booth was unveiled at the Kiama Village Shopping Centre by Member for Kiama Gareth Ward.
“To help customers get a card, Transport for NSW is holding information kiosks for seniors and pensioners at selected shopping centres,” he said.
“Opal staff will be on hand to explain how the Gold Opal card works and help eligible customers apply.”
The majority of paper tickets for public transport will be phased out as of January 1, 2016. Many of the tickets to be terminated have seen large decreases in sales since the new tap and go ticketing system was rolled out.
The Pensioner Excursion Ticket is one of the tickets that will no longer be sold, so it is important seniors and pensioners get their Opal card prior to January.
“Customers who apply for a Gold Opal card at the information kiosk will receive their card in the mail within five to seven working days,” Mr Ward said.
“The Gold Opal card has many benefits including the same $2.50 all day travel currently available with a Pensioner Excursion Ticket and it’s just as easy to use.
“Just add value to your card over the phone, online or in a retailer and you’re always ready to travel.”
