The Green Army is a hands-on environmental action program that supports local environment and heritage conservation projects throughout Australia.
Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis joined the new Green Army team at Jerrara Dam on Thursday.
“This Green Army Team is very special as it is the first team to work on Jerrara Dam Arboretum Extension and Bushland Walk,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“Conservation Australia and Kiama council have done a tremendous job initiating this exciting project.
“The Arboretum has been a long-term vision for Neil Hawkins, who unfortunately passed away before seeing the reality of his dream for the Jerrara Dam area.”
She said the project will improve the resilience of the rainforest and vine thicket, and build on work carried out by Kiama council and volunteer community groups.
“The current team is working very hard to make the Arboretum a must-see destination for residents and tourists visiting the region.”
The Green Army aims to give young job-seekers, aged between 17-24, the chance to gain practical skills and help improve their own local community and environment.
The federal government has allocated more than $700 million for the program over four years from July 1, 2015.
