The year 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of The Salvation Army worldwide.
The Salvation Army’s Karen Walker said there was an increasing need for Salvos’ services, especially in growing areas such as Shellharbour.
“People are struggling to meet the cost of living,” she said.
Founded in the slums of London by former Methodist minister, William Booth, The Salvation Army quickly spread worldwide and is now operational in 127 countries.
Here is an overview of the organisation’s history in the Kiama and Shellharbour regions.
Early beginnings: The Salvation Army opened its doors in Kiama in December 1884, four years after the organisation first began in Australia.
It remained a presence in Kiama for more than 40 years until its closure in 1926.
The Shellharbour Salvation Army was originally known as the Port Kembla Salvation Army when it opened in 1939. It changed its name to Shellharbour Salvation Army in 1987.
Salvo greats, past and present: The Salvation Army in the Shellharbour/Kiama area has produced outstanding Salvationists and supporters.
Robert Booth, an early supporter of the Kiama branch, is credited with partially funding the organisation’ first hall, opened in 1888.
Present day heroes include Graeme Packer, considered “Mr Salvation Army”. A member for more than 70 years, Mr Packer heads up The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal collection in Kiama. In addition, Mr Packer organises the Shellharbour band to play at Anzac Day marches and dawn services each year, and Christmas carol programs at Kiama and Jamberoo.
The Salvation Army today: The Salvation Army remains a vibrant presence in Shellharbour and surrounds today, with worship meetings held every Sunday at 10am and 6pm. Various groups run throughout the week for young and old.
Fashion forward: The Salvos launched its first stand-alone ‘Street Boutique’ in Kiama in August. The shop encourages fashion savvy, budget-conscious shoppers to head to their nearby Salvos stores and discover affordable fashion.
