The Cystic Fibrosis Great Escape is a 10-day car rally travelling through unique locations in Australia.
The Great Escape raises funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis Australia.
The 2015 event runs from September 7-17.
This year’s track started in Kiama, and is headed to Byron Bay via ‘‘Back of Bourke’’.
On Monday, the Great Escape had a street parade through Kiama.
On Tuesday morning, entrants were flagged off from Black Beach Reserve.
Perth’s Teresa Carlson, an ambassador for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, drove the lead vehicle alongside Coffs Harbour resident Sharyn Shaw.
As top fund-raisers this year ($24,000 thus far), their vehicle enjoys pole position each day, although they said their role is primarily to support the other cars.
Mrs Carlson’s motivation for participating is her late daughter Michelle, who died 22 years ago, aged 17 from cystic fibrosis.
This year’s event featured more than 30 entrants from throughout the country.
‘‘It’s just an amazing motoring event,’’ Mrs Carlson said.
‘‘The camaraderie... We’re just one big family really.
‘‘Every year we go somewhere different, and it’s just a lot of fun.
‘‘This here in Kiama has been a beautiful spot.’’
The event was founded in 2002, and now typically raises an average of more than $400,000 each year.
Although car numbers were a little down this year, Mrs Carlson estimated they would raise $350,000 in 2015. In the 13 years the rally has been running, drivers have visited a lengthy list of places including Shepparton, Port Arthur, Hobart, Mudgee, Orange, Port Douglas, Fraser Island, the Whitsundays, Batemans Bay and Kangaroo Island.
