The island, at the entrance to Lake Illawarra, is one of the most prominent coastal features between Flagstaff Hill and Bass Point.
Shellharbour Council is the trustee of the island. It is one of several properties formerly controlled by the Lake Illawarra Authority which was disbanded in 2013.
The island is listed as having state significance because of natural, Indigenous and European cultural heritage elements.
The island contains threatened flora and fauna species, natural habitats and breeding grounds and Indigenous archaeology, all of which are classified as ‘‘rare’’ at state heritage level.
It also includes relics of an industrial railway.
Shellharbour Council’s tours will include talks about the threatened grasslands, the geology and conservation of the island and the failed attempt to make a harbour in the 1890s.
‘‘This is an easy walk but you must have a reasonable level of fitness and agility,’’ a council spokeswoman said.
People need to register for one of the nature walks to be held from 12.30pm to 3.30pm on Sunday, September 13 and Sunday, October 11.
Children aged over 12 years are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Places are limited and bookings are essential by contacting 4221 6111 or email sustainability@shellharbour .nsw.gov.au.
