Police say a car being driven by a 21-year-old woman from Kiama Downs turned right onto the Princes Highway from Woollybutt Drive and collided with another car about 5.50am.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 61-year-old man from Wyong, allegedly failed to stop and later rammed the rear of woman’s car.
Lake Illawarra police Crime Prevention Officer Mark Scott said the impact caused the woman’s car to hit the centre median fence.
‘‘As a result of the impact, it appears that a 20-year-old female passenger from Oak Flats, in the rear seat of that car, was ejected through the rear window,’’ he said.
The passenger sustained a major head injury and other minor injuries.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said the 20-year-old was taken to the NSW Ambulance Rescue helicopter base at Albion Park and flown to St George Hospital in Sydney.
The spokesman said the woman was the only patient treated, but was unable to provide details about her condition.
The incident is being investigated by Highway Patrol officers from Lake Illawarra police.
