About 5.50am on Thursday a car being driven by a 21-year-old female from Kiama Downs made a right turn from Woollybutt Drive on to the Princes Highway.
According to police, there is a clearly displayed ‘give way’ sign at the intersection that the driver failed to obey.
In making the turn the vehicle allegedly collided with another car being driven by a 61-year-old man from Wyong, and failed to stop and exchange particulars.
The second car, being driven by the Wyong man is believed to have then rammed the rear of the car being driven by the female driver.
This collision caused that car to collide with the centre median fence.
As a result of the impact it appears that a 20-year-old female passenger from Oak Flats in the rear seat of that car was ejected through the rear window, sustaining a major head injury and other minor injuries.
She is currently in hospital undergoing surgery.
This incident is currently under investigation by Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol officers.
