The redevelopment includes the demolition of all existing buildings on the 3.3-hectare site, except the heritage-listed Barroul House.
It also includes the development of the Kiama Aged Care Centre of Excellence, which will include a 134-bed residential aged care facility, 51 independent living units, 16 assisted-living units, a community services and activities centre, the restoration of Barroul House and the provision of associated infrastructure.
Submissions will be accepted until September 25. Due to the value of the project and the council’s interest, the southern Joint Regional Planning Panel will be the determining authority.
Kiama mayor Brian Petschler said he was hopeful that all approval processes would be finalised by the end of this year.
‘‘It is a complex matter with the area health service involved,’’ Cr Petschler said.
‘‘We had a public meeting prior to lodging the development application and the feedback was generally positive,
‘‘This is another opportunity for people to get a good look at the plans and tell us what they think.’’
The latest financial analysis of the Kiama Hospital redevelopment project indicated the project’s cost had reached $73.3million.
The project was valued at $39million two years ago, when it attracted an $8million grant from the state government through the $100million Illawarra Infrastructure Fund.
Council staff said the additional cost had ‘‘been offset by a review of the projected sales values and income that has also indicated an increase’’.
The development application can be viewed at the council’s administrative centre in Manning Street, Kiama, at the Kiama Library, the Joyce Wheatley Community Centre, the North Kiama Neighbourhood Centre and at the Gerringong Town Hall on Thursdays only.
The document can also be downloaded from the council’s website at kiama .nsw.gov.au.
