The smell of burning rubber was thick in Milton and spread for several kilometres.
The iconic Milton business has been operated by the Solomon family since 1978.
They locked up as normal around 6pm, but then around 10.20pm a member of the public saw a small fire in the front office.
They dialled 000 and emergency services were there in minutes.
By then, the fire had engulfed the building.
Firefighters faced a tough battle, coating the building in foam and trying to keep fuel tanks cool.
There were explosions in the building as diesel and kerosene tanks blew up.
It took fire fighters more than one and a half hours to extinguish the blaze by which time the building was destroyed.
During the fire, the Princes Highway was blocked for several hours.
Detectives have been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
