Dementia Awareness Month started on September 1 and Alzheimer's Australia wants Illawarra residents to help build a dementia-friendly nation, where people living with dementia are respected, valued and supported to maintain a good quality of life.

About 8000 people in the Illawarra suffer from dementia, and that number is expected to soar to about 17,920 by 2050.
A public forum on dementia and diversity will be held at The Builders Club in Wollongong on September 24.
The free forum, from 10am-2pm, will include talks by Dr Clair Langford, Pino Migliorino and Susan McCarthy.
