Foundation chairman Ross Williams says that what it wants to start in Moruya would differ from what existing services offer.
“The Reaching Out Foundation sees a major point of difference in its efforts, from that of the existing service providers in a community such as Moruya, in that it is unique,” he said.
“We see ourselves as empowering community though a volunteer work-force offering compassionate support of those who may be doing it tough.
“We operate without paid staff or the financial support of governments or corporates as many of the major charitable bodies have.”
Mr Williams has no doubt that Moruya needs the foundation’s help.
“In the last census Moruya had 29 or 15.5 per cent of homeless people out of total of some 187 spread over 11 towns comprising the South Coast,” he said.
“We also know from the experience of established professional agencies, who have indicated strong support this initiative and from the existence of a limited operation connected to the local Anglican church.
“It is this service which we wish to augment with a bigger workforce and food collection operation.”
He is confident of getting the foundation up and running in Moruya.
“When we launched in Merimbula recently we ended up with 60 volunteers,” he said
“We have support of local NGOs and other bodies like SEWACS, (South East Women and Children's Services) who operate a five bedroom crisis accommodation facility in Moruya.
“We have support of the Community Service work of the local shire.”
