To help answer these questions, Shellharbour City State Emergency Service (SES) will hit the road on July 11, spreading information about flash flooding.

In the wake of recent heavy rain, the SES decided it was timely to inform people about what to do when the weather turns nasty. 

Shellharbour SES respond to many calls for assistance throughout the year. 

One of the most common problems is flash flooding  - whereby the sudden rise of water separates houses, roads and people. 

Sunset Avenue in Warilla and Taylor Road in Albion Park were affected in the latest deluge, causing residents a number of problems. 

Shellharbour City SES Local Controller Terrie-Ann Hurt said many calls were from homeowners unsure of what to do.

“We have found that many homeowners weren’t aware that there were many steps they could take to prevent the damage occurring in the first place,’’ she said.

“Simple steps such as cleaning gutters or making a home emergency plan can prevent extensive damage later.’’

Members of the Shellharbour City SES will be door-knocking around the area to talk to homeowners and ensure they understand what they can do to prevent damage to their property. 

If you live near Osborne Parade in Warilla, keep an eye out for the volunteers. They will be door-knocking between 10am and midday on July 11. 

A community barbecue will follow - starting at midday at Elliott Park.
