Organised by Leagues Club staff member Sharyn Tester, the event was held in late May and the Cancer Council’s Jennifer Menchin attended the club last week to collect the cash.
“Considering it was a bit of a rushed effort, I am thrilled we managed to fill the auditorium and, thanks to the generosity of local businesses who donated a lot of the food and raffle items, the event was a huge success,” Mrs Tester said.
“We also had things like tarot card readings and psychic which added to the fun.
“We relied mainly on Facebook and word-of-mouth, and we couldn’t have had a better day.”
Cancer Council’s Community Engagement Manager Jennifer Manchin said the organisation relied almost completely on events like Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Daffodil Day, Relay for Life and the Pink Ribbon campaign for funds.
“Donations are much appreciated and very, very important to us and we thank Sharyn and the Kiama Leagues Club for their continued support,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Kiama Leagues Club is ramping up the entertainment from this week, a pool comp from 6.30pm and Karaoke Thursday Open Mike night from 7pm.
“We really want people to come along and enjoy Thursday nights at the club and we are looking forward to giving locals the chance to sing their favourite songs with the backing of a live band,” General manager Peter Wright said.
“We are hoping to provide our younger members in particular with a reason to come to the club on a Thursday night.”
