A PROPOSED $6.9-million development for the Gerringong town centre has been approved by Kiama Council, three months after it was initially rejected for multiple breaches of the council's development control plan.

The application, lodged by Surrend8 Developments Pty Ltd, is for a 3024-square metre site on the corner of Belinda and Noble streets.
It includes 29 units, eight professional suites and five shops as well as two levels of basement parking for 73 cars.
In March, council staff recommended the project be approved, subject to conditions; however councillors raised concerns that although the development had minor breaches of the council's development control plan, there were lots of them.
Following a heated debate, councillors voted 6-2 to reject the application in March as councillors took issue with the "square and boxy" design which was inconsistent with other buildings in Gerringong.
Last week there was no debate as councillors voted unanimously to approve revised plans for the project.
The proponents lodged revised plans for the facade after the architect spent more time studying buildings in Gerringong so that the revised application was "more reflective of the older style of buildings which remain in Gerringong".
"Specifically, balconies have been designed with pitched roofs and the balustrading designed in a more traditional form," the application said.
Kiama mayor Brian Petschler said "significant changes" were made to the original application which led to approval this time around.
"I don't think council is overwhelmingly delighted with the way the developments have gone in that part of Gerringong, but it is the way the dynamics of the situation are," Cr Petschler said.
"If I had a preferred option, it was the proponents had a design that met our criteria from the ground up, rather than have one overdesigned and then taken back the other way ... but that is the nature of the game.
"The changes are significant and the end result is reasonable."
He said the changes solved most of the problems.
