Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has called on the Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli to look into the feasibility of building a new high school in the suburbs of Flinders and Shell Cove.
According to data collected in 2011 by ABS more than 20 per cent of Shellharbour's population are under the age of 18 and of those the majority lived in Shell Cove (32.8 per cent) and Flinders (31.6 per cent).
Furthermore the population of Shellharbour is forecast to grow from 68,638 to 85,262 by 2036 according to figures on Shellharbour City Council's social atlas.
Ms Watson said there was "certainly anecdotal evidence" that several local high schools in the Shellharbour electorate were close to, or at capacity.
"I had parents in Flinders and Shell Cove approach me during the election campaign asking whether there were plans afoot to establish another high school in the area," she said.
"The facts are that the Flinders and Shell Cove areas are contributing to the population growth in local schools. The same is true of Dapto and West Dapto."
Ms Watson put four questions to the minister on the current number of enrolled students at each government high school and the total capacity of student enrolments. She then asked the minister to undertake "a scoping study" to obtain "an evidence-based picture" of how student enrolments were tracking.
"I hope the minister will see the good sense in undertaking a study as soon as possible", Ms Watson said.
The minister has 35 days to respond to Ms Watson's questions.
