NBN manager state corporate affairs NSW/ACT Kelly Stevens said this meant more than 1650 homes and businesses were now able to experience the benefits of fast and reliable broadband through the NBN network.
In the south of the region, four towers were now live servicing 1200 premises and they were at Bemboka, Candelo Town, Merimbula surrounds and Wolumla.
And to the north, two towers servicing 470 premises were switched on and they were at Mogo and Eurobodalla.
Meanwhile in the Narooma and Bermagui area, the Wonga Road tower near Nangudga Lake had its planning finalised and construction is due to commence early in the third quarter of 2015.
Meanwhile, the proposed tower at Brushgrove Lane that would service the Tilba area is still in the planning phase, according to the spokesperson, as were the proposed NBN fixed wireless towers at Wallaga Lake and Bermagui.
Stevens also said NBN wanted to remind people that the switch to the NBN wasn’t automatic and people should contact their phone or internet provider to discuss making the switch to fast broadband.
Telstra adds 4G small cell
In related telecommunications news, the Narooma News last week reported that tourists and locals in the heritage village of Central Tilba with 4G equipped phones may have noticed improved signal.
Telstra has installed a 4G “small cell” in Central Tilba in early May and this will have increased 4G data services in the area.
A small cell is a miniature version of mobile network technology that is used to boost coverage and capacity.
Customers with 4G compatible devices will be able to access mobile data services when within range of the cell.
At this time, the small cell rollout will only provide 4G data services, and will not allow for voice calls.
“We are constantly working to enhance local services and the installation of this new cell will boost 4G coverage and capacity for customers with compatible devices,” Telstra acting area general manager Larissa Redford said.
“Customers in the coverage area will automatically access the new service as part of their standard mobile service, but please note at this time it is a data-only service.”
