Powerful surf conditions are expected between the Victorian and Queensland borders with the warning in place for the entire length of the NSW Coastline.
Off-Shore Swells for areas south of Seal Rocks are expected to increase throughout Thursday afternoon reaching peaks between 2.5 – 4 metres.
Conditions are expected to further strengthen on Friday as the swell travels north with the off-shore swell peaking near 4 metres.
Strong winds have also been forecast for near the coast, and it is expected that the swell will gradually subside throughout Saturday.
“Although the larger swells are expected off-shore conditions could potentially be challenging on some beaches. Rock fishing, boating, and surfing are all great activities to do during the colder months, but we urge everyone to employ the same safety tips that they do during summer,” NSW Lifesaving Manager Andy Kent said.
“Things like fishing with a partner, wearing a life jacket, letting people know your plans, taking the time to assess conditions, and being aware of your environment are all tips that everyone should make as part of their routine when heading out to enjoy our wonderful and diverse coastline,” he concluded.
Volunteer patrols finished in April, however Surf Life Saving assets are on stand-by to respond to coastal emergencies if required.
A limited number of beaches will be patrolled throughout the winter months by council lifeguards, please check the Beachsafe Website for a list of patrolled beaches, up-to-date beach information and safety tips.
The Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW meanwhile is also warning of dangerous conditions Friday, June 19.
Complex weather off the coast on Friday could lead to deceptive and dangerous conditions for rock fishers. Two low pressure systems will bring seas of 3 metres plus swell of 3 metres on the entire coast on Friday. Swells will come from two directions: one from south/southeast, another from the east or northeast.
Large and powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.
Conditions are expected to start easing on Saturday.
General Safety Tips During Dangerous Surf Conditions:
Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves.
Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red & yellow flags.
Check the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities.
Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket.
See www.beachsafe.org.au for patrolled locations/times and rock fishing safety information.
If witnessing an in-water emergency dial Triple Zero – Police.
