Jahmalia Downes, a year 1 student from Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School in Kiama was awarded first prize in the Catholic Schools Week Student Video Competition Primary Individual category.
The NSW/ACT Video Competition featured the theme of ‘what will your Catholic school of tomorrow look like?’
Jahmalia used Lego and household objects to create a concept of the future, using her toys and imagination.
The judges praised Jahmalia’s concept that in the future kids will be learning in any location.
Catholic schools from throughout NSW and ACT produced 134 video entries this year and the judging panel were impressed with the quality of the entries, particularly in terms of the technical execution and creative vision displayed.
The criteria for judging was based on the impact of message, creativity and originality, the quality of the video and the effective use of available technology to enhance the message.
There was a winner in each of four different categories.
Jahmalia won an iPad for her efforts, as well as a JB Hi-Fi gift voucher for the school.
She said her uncle had helped her film the video.
‘‘I got toys out and used Lego to create different scenes,’’ she said.
‘‘The Lego land in the pool was my favourite part.’’
Ss Peter and Paul principal Jacqueline Lee said they were proud of Jahmalia’s achievement.
‘‘We encourage students to take up opportunities such as these, as it allows them to express their creativity in another form,’’ she said.
‘‘We really encourage students to use their talents.’’
