Last week more than $1.8 million was handed over to Shellharbour City Council to help fund the Dunmore Resource Recovery Redevelopment project which is hoped to assist in the introduction of a weekly green waste collection service for Shellharbour.
The project includes the relocation of the existing transfer station ($8.2 million) and an organics processing facility ($6.4 million) for processing food waste and garden organics.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier for the Illawarra and South Coast Gareth Ward announced the $1.85 million funding boost and said the money would help fund the organics processing component.
“The development application and supporting EIS was submitted in December 2014 and is currently being assessed by the Joint Regional Planning Panel,” he said.
“Subject to approval, construction is anticipated to commence in mid-2015.”
Shellharbour mayor Marianne Saliba also welcomed the funding which would go toward the overall cost of the project which has been estimated in the order of $14.5 million.
“Council is very pleased with this funding which will go towards the organics processing component of the project, which has been included in Council’s 2015-16 Budget,” she said.
“Council successfully obtained $2.05 million in grant funding from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) under the Waste Less, Recycle More Program to assist with funding the transfer station component of the project.”
