On May 26, a new show by Jamie Cole, Wavelength, will be unveiled at Minnamurra Cafe.
This abstract, mixed media exhibition explores the colourful coastline and marine life of the Minnamurra area.
A private opening party and fundraiser is taking place on Friday, May 29, to celebrate Wavelength and auction off one of the surfboard pieces, with proceeds from the sale going to Suicide Prevention Australia.
The early part of Cole's professional career was spent at the front of the art classroom and behind the camera as a freelance photographer, until a decline in his health in the mid-'90s.
Cole rebuilt his strength in the swimming pool, winning medals at the Gay Games in New York and Amsterdam, and a nine-medal haul in the 2002 Gay Games in Sydney.
It was during this time Cole also discovered a talent for coaching swimming; launching a successful career that spanned 14 years.
A series of injuries and other ailments, including a left arm reconstruction and a broken back, resulted in another career change.
Unable to coach any more, and at the same time receiving exhibition invitations and painting commissions, Cole left his temporary art studio, better known as his kitchen bench in Sydney, and set up a dedicated art space in his home in Kiama.
Cole, 47, now paints full-time and is looking forward to hosting his second solo show at Minnamurra Cafe.
He said he always aimed to align himself with charities when undertaking his art events.
This was due to his past experiences, which included being a group counsellor at the AIDS Council in the '90s.
"I'm an ex-teacher and an ex-coach, and dealt with a lot of young people dealing with mental health issues," he said.
"I've been a mental health and suicide prevention advocate for a long time."
Cole said he had enjoyed holidaying in Kiama in the '80s, and was excited by his new surroundings.
"I moved here for a better life, a sea change, and a place to paint," he said.
"I got back into my art as therapy. It brings me happiness, and hopefully other people as well."
To attend the launch, please RSVP to bruce@canvasevents.com.au by Monday, May 25.
The exhibition will run from May 26 to June 23.
Minnamurra Cafe is at 1A Rangoon Road.
