Plebs, Pros and Personalities for Suicide Prevention Australia (PPP4SPA) was held at Shellharbour gym Jetts, plus four other venues across the country to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention.
This was the first time the event has been held in the Illawarra and members of the Illawarra Dragons, Joel Thompson, Dan Hunt and Trent Merrit went along on Saturday to support the event.
Event organiser Meg Proctor said the turnout was bigger than expected.
“We had about 39 runners and we raised about $600 which will all go to Suicide Prevention Australia,” she said.
“We have already spoken about putting together an event for businesses next year. We organised this one in only three weeks so next year we can be a bit more prepared.”
CEO of Suicide Prevention Australia, Sue Murray, said the event was established by a group of people who lost loved ones to suicide two years ago.
“It has now grown to five events this year, engaging hundreds of people across the country, who are all passionate about the health and wellbeing of the community,” she said.
Money raised will help build community capacity for suicide prevention with part of it going toward making resources available online.
“Everyone is touched by suicide but everyone can play a part in prevention.”
