Around 9.30pm on Saturday, April 25 several police responded to public concern about a large party on Rani Avenue, Shell Cove.
On their way to the scene, two officers, travelling in a marked police car were "pelted" with two beer bottles by a group of approximately 150 teenagers that were congregated at the intersection of Brindabella Avenue and Cove Bouelvard, Shell Cove, about 200 metres from the party.
One bottle smashed on the front window of the police van showering the police in glass and injuring one police officer with lacerations above his right eye.
The two male officers in the car, a senior constable and a constable, managed to arrest one youth – a 16-year-old boy – who had allegedly thrown one of the bottles.
The teen was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, before being released into the custody of a guardian due to his high level of intoxication. He will face the court at a date to be determined.
The injured constable was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for treatment.
The party was broken up and the large groups of youths congregating in the near vicinity were all dispersed.
Inquiries into the matter are continuing.
